Additionally, SpaceX aims to achieve an in-space relight of one of the Ship's Raptor engines and a successful descent and splashdown of the stage in the Indian Ocean.

Looking Ahead

If all goes well with Flight 13, SpaceX may attempt the first Starship V3 recovery back at its Starbase, Texas, launch site for the following mission, Flight 14. However, there are still several technical achievements left on Starship's checklist before it can become fully operational. These include launching into a stable orbit, demonstrating successful rendezvous and docking, and mastering the challenge of transferring and maintaining cryogenic fuels in zero-g.

SpaceX is aiming to achieve all this within the year, which is an ambitious timeline. NASA has contracted Starship as one of its lunar lander vehicles for the Artemis program, with expectations for a crew-capable version by 2028.
